I’ve finally gotten to the point where I created a “go bag.” Knock on wood, we haven’t needed anything like it yet. But there have been enough situations that hit just a little too close to home. It felt like it couldn’t hurt and would hopefully be an insurance policy I’d never need (like carrying an umbrella on the chance of rain - if you have it, it won’t rain, right?!).
Along with Z Bars, Nuun tablets, Saltines and a jar of peanut butter, here’s what’s in mine: Emergency Go Bag.
It’s not everything that is recommended by the government, but it felt sufficient for my peace of mind to get it officially checked off my list.
Looking for help on managing life outside of work? Like finally finishing a project that’s been living on your to-do list forever?
This is not the first time I’ve gone a little bit crazy on emergency preparedness. I also have what has been described by my husband as an “intense” first aid kit. I used Martha Stewart as an inspiration, but in a simpler form and with a few kid items added.
I gave it as a college graduation/first adult apartment gift to a few of our babysitters (with a fire extinguisher - most boring gift ever!) and I am relieved to report that it came in very handy when one of their roommates sliced off the tip of their thumb!
Here’s to hoping we continue to only need it when we run out of Advil. And that the only time I need to open the “go bag” is in when we are in dire need of a deck of cards.
